Overview

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer is one of the most iconic names in the history of cinema. Founded in 1924 through the merger of Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures, and Louis B. Mayer Productions, MGM dominated Hollywood's golden age with the slogan "More Stars Than There Are in Heaven." The studio's roaring lion logo (Leo the Lion) is one of the most recognized corporate symbols in entertainment history. Amazon acquired MGM in 2022, and the studio now operates as part of Amazon MGM Studios.

MGM's film library contains approximately 4,000 titles, including some of the most commercially valuable and culturally significant films ever produced. The James Bond franchise alone has generated over $7 billion in worldwide grosses across 25 official films spanning six decades.

History

Marcus Loew orchestrated the merger that created MGM in 1924, installing Louis B. Mayer as studio head and Irving Thalberg as head of production. Under Thalberg's leadership, MGM became the most prestigious studio in Hollywood, producing Ben-Hur (1925), Grand Hotel (1932), Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), and The Wizard of Oz (1939). The studio's star roster during its golden age included Greta Garbo, Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, Judy Garland, and Gene Kelly.

MGM's musical productions of the 1940s and 1950s, including Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), An American in Paris (1951), Singin' in the Rain (1952), and Gigi (1958), set the standard for the genre. The studio also produced 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), the Rocky franchise (1976-present), Rain Man (1988), Thelma and Louise (1991), and the Legally Blonde series.

The studio changed ownership multiple times from the 1970s onward, passing through Kirk Kerkorian, Ted Turner (who acquired the pre-1986 library, now part of Warner Bros. Discovery), Giancarlo Parretti, Credit Lyonnais, a consortium led by Sony, and finally Amazon in 2022. Despite these ownership changes, the MGM brand and library retained their value.

The Bond Franchise

MGM's most valuable ongoing property is the James Bond franchise, produced by EON Productions (the Broccoli/Wilson family company) in partnership with MGM. The franchise spans from Dr. No (1962) to No Time to Die (2021) and has generated billions in box office, home entertainment, and licensing revenue. The Bond films have been distributed through various studio partners over the decades, with Amazon MGM Studios now handling distribution.

What Filmmakers Should Know

MGM's integration into Amazon MGM Studios means the company now operates within Amazon's broader content strategy, which includes theatrical releases, Prime Video streaming, and the MGM+ premium channel. Amazon's acquisition of MGM was driven primarily by the value of the library and the Bond franchise, but the combined entity also develops new content for both theatrical and streaming distribution.

For filmmakers, Amazon MGM Studios evaluates projects for both theatrical release and Prime Video, with the platform and release strategy determined by the project's commercial profile and target audience.
