Overview

Millennium Media is one of the most prolific independent production and financing companies in the action genre. Founded by Avi Lerner, the company produces and co-produces approximately 10 to 15 films per year, primarily in the action, thriller, and horror genres, distributing them through major studio partners including Lionsgate, Summit Entertainment, and others. Millennium's business model centers on producing commercially reliable genre content with established action stars at moderate budgets that guarantee profitability across theatrical and ancillary markets.

The company has produced over 300 films since its founding and maintains one of the most active production pipelines in the independent space.

History

Avi Lerner, an Israeli-born producer with roots in the Cannon Films tradition of low-budget action filmmaking, has been involved in the independent action film business since the 1980s. Millennium Films (now Millennium Media) was established in the late 1990s as a successor to his earlier production entities.

The company broke through commercially with the Rambo franchise continuation (Rambo, 2008, directed by Sylvester Stallone), then assembled the all-star action ensemble The Expendables (2010) and its sequels, which collectively grossed over $800 million worldwide. Other productions include the Escape Plan series, London Has Fallen (2016) and its sequels, Olympus Has Fallen (2013), The Hitman's Bodyguard (2017), Hunter Killer (2018), Angel Has Fallen (2019), and dozens of other action and thriller features.

Millennium's approach follows the Cannon Films template established in the 1980s: cast recognizable action stars, keep budgets disciplined, pre-sell international rights to finance production, and deliver commercially reliable genre entertainment that performs across markets regardless of critical reception.

Business Model

Millennium pre-sells international distribution rights before production begins, typically covering a significant portion of the production budget through advance commitments from distributors in key territories. This approach reduces financial risk and allows the company to greenlight projects without requiring major studio co-financing from the start.

The company's relationships with established action genre stars, including Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Bruce Willis (before his retirement), and others, provide the recognizable names that international pre-sales buyers require.

What Filmmakers Should Know

Millennium focuses primarily on commercially oriented action, thriller, and horror content with established genre appeal. The company's production volume means it regularly needs writers, directors, and other creative talent for its slate. Genre filmmakers with action credentials and the ability to work efficiently within budget constraints are the company's preferred collaborators.
