MK2 Films is a French entertainment company operating across production, international sales, distribution, exhibition, and catalog management. Founded in 1974 by Marin Karmitz, MK2 is best known for its exceptional film catalog, which includes works by some of the most significant auteur filmmakers in cinema history. The company operates a chain of arthouse cinemas in Paris and manages international sales for its productions and catalog titles.
MK2's identity is defined by its commitment to auteur cinema at the highest level. The company's catalog includes the films of Abbas Kiarostami, David Lynch, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Michael Haneke, Francois Truffaut, Claude Chabrol, and Charlie Chaplin, among others. This collection represents one of the most artistically significant film libraries in private hands.
History
Marin Karmitz, a Romanian-born filmmaker and producer, founded MK2 in 1974 in Paris. Karmitz began as a director before transitioning to production and distribution, building MK2 into a vertically integrated company that controlled the entire chain from production through exhibition. His son Nathanael Karmitz now leads the company.
MK2 produced and distributed key works of European and international cinema throughout the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, including Kieslowski's Three Colors trilogy (Blue, White, Red, 1993-1994), Haneke's early films including Cache (2005), and numerous Cannes competition titles. The company's acquisition of the Chaplin film library added one of cinema's most valuable catalogs to MK2's holdings.
MK2 also operates MK2 Cinemas, a chain of arthouse theaters in Paris that serve as both exhibition venues and cultural landmarks. The cinemas host premieres, retrospectives, and special events that connect contemporary audiences with the breadth of cinema history represented in MK2's catalog.
