Pathe
One of the oldest and most influential film companies in the world, founded in Paris in 1896. Pathe operates across production, distribution, exhibition, and international sales throughout Europe.
Overview
Pathe is one of the founding companies of the global film industry, established in 1896 by Charles Pathe and his brothers in Paris. At its peak in the early 1900s, Pathe was the largest film equipment and production company in the world, responsible for innovations including the Pathe newsreel and early color film processes. Today, Pathe operates as a major European entertainment company with divisions in production, distribution, exhibition, and international sales.
Pathe's modern operations span France, the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Switzerland. The company produces and distributes approximately 20 to 30 films per year across these territories and operates a cinema chain of approximately 1,700 screens through a joint venture with Gaumont.
History
The Pathe brothers founded Pathe Freres in 1896, initially selling phonographs before pivoting to film equipment and production. By 1908, Pathe was producing more films than all American studios combined and had established distribution offices across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The company's rooster logo became one of the first globally recognized corporate symbols in entertainment.
Pathe pioneered the newsreel format, which dominated cinema news coverage from 1910 through the 1960s. The company also developed Pathecolor, an early color film process. Through World War I and the rise of Hollywood, Pathe's dominance diminished but the company adapted, transitioning from global market leader to a major European production and distribution force.
In the modern era, Pathe has produced and co-produced internationally acclaimed films including La Vie en Rose (2007), The Queen (2006), Slumdog Millionaire (2008, co-financed), Chicken Run (2000), and Selma (2014). The company's UK division, Pathe UK, has been particularly active in British prestige filmmaking.
