Scott Free Productions
Ridley Scott and Tony Scott's production company, behind Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, The Martian, Blade Runner 2049, and dozens of major films and television series.
Overview
Scott Free Productions is the production company founded by directors Ridley Scott and the late Tony Scott. Operating from offices in both Los Angeles and London, the company has produced some of the most commercially successful and visually influential films of the past three decades. Scott Free functions as the primary production vehicle for Ridley Scott's directorial projects alongside a broader slate of films and television series produced by the company's team.
The company's output ranges from large-scale historical epics to science fiction, thriller, and prestige television, reflecting Ridley Scott's eclectic but consistently ambitious creative range.
History
Ridley Scott and Tony Scott established Scott Free Productions in 1995, though both brothers had been producing independently before formally combining their efforts under a single banner. Ridley Scott's directorial career, already distinguished by Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982), Thelma and Louise (1991), and 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992), entered a new phase of commercial dominance in the late 1990s.
Gladiator (2000), produced by Scott Free through DreamWorks and Universal, won the Academy Award for Best Picture, earned $460 million worldwide, and revived the sword-and-sandal epic genre. Black Hawk Down (2001), Hannibal (2001), Matchstick Men (2003), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), American Gangster (2007), Robin Hood (2010), Prometheus (2012), The Counselor (2013), The Martian (2015), Alien: Covenant (2017), All the Money in the World (2017), House of Gucci (2021), The Last Duel (2021), Napoleon (2023), and Gladiator II (2024) followed.
Tony Scott directed Man on Fire (2004), Domino (2005), Déjà Vu (2006), The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009), and Unstoppable (2010) through Scott Free. Following Tony Scott's death in 2012, the company has continued under Ridley Scott's leadership.
Scott Free has also been highly active in television production, producing The Good Wife (2009-2016), The Man in the High Castle (2015-2019), Raised by Wolves (2020-2022), and Halo (2022-present).
What Filmmakers Should Know
Scott Free develops projects internally through its production team and through relationships with writers, agents, and studios. The company evaluates material based on Ridley Scott's creative interests and the commercial viability of the property for major studio distribution. Given the company's scale and relationships, projects typically move through major studio distribution partners including Disney, Universal, and Warner Bros.
