Overview

Shepperton Studios is one of the most significant film production facilities in the United Kingdom, located in Shepperton, Surrey, approximately 18 miles southwest of central London. The studio has hosted major productions continuously since 1931 and is now operated by the Pinewood Group alongside its sister facility, Pinewood Studios. A major expansion completed in the early 2020s added substantial new stage space, positioning Shepperton as one of the largest studio complexes in Europe.

The facility encompasses over 100 acres and includes multiple sound stages, backlots, workshops, production offices, and post-production suites. Shepperton's proximity to London, combined with the UK's film tax relief system, makes it a primary production base for both Hollywood tentpoles and British independent productions.

History

The studio was founded in 1931 by Norman Loudon on the grounds of Littleton Park, a country estate. During World War II, the studio was used for war-related film production. After the war, Shepperton entered a golden period, hosting productions including The Third Man (1949), A Town Like Alice (1956), and Oliver! (1968).

Major productions from the 1970s onward include Ridley Scott's Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982), Gandhi (1982), A Fish Called Wanda (1988), Elizabeth (1998), Gladiator (2000), Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity (2013), Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), 1917 (2019), and No Time to Die (2021).

The Pinewood Group acquired Shepperton Studios in 2001, integrating it into a combined operation that offers productions the choice of two major UK facilities. A massive expansion program added new stages and support buildings, driven by increasing demand from Hollywood studios seeking to produce in the UK.

What Filmmakers Should Know

Shepperton rents stages and facilities to productions on a commercial basis. The UK's Audio Visual Expenditure Credit (AVEC), offering a credit of up to 25.5% of qualifying UK expenditure, makes Shepperton attractive to international productions. The deep pool of experienced British crew based in London and the surrounding counties ensures access to top-tier talent across all departments.

For independent filmmakers, Shepperton's smaller stages and the possibility of booking during less-demanded periods can provide access to professional studio facilities at rates below the premium charged for the largest stages.
