STX Entertainment
Independent studio focused on mid-budget films targeting global audiences, operating a data-driven model that combines Hollywood talent with international co-financing partnerships.
Overview
STX Entertainment is an independent studio that launched in 2014 with the goal of filling the gap left by major studios' increasing focus on franchise tentpoles. Founded by Robert Simonds, STX targets the mid-budget space between $20 million and $80 million, producing and distributing films designed to perform across both domestic and international markets. The studio uses a data-driven approach to green-lighting decisions, combining audience analytics with talent packaging to reduce financial risk.
STX's model relies heavily on international co-financing partnerships, particularly in China through its relationship with Huayi Brothers and other Asian investors. This structure allows the studio to share production risk across territories while maintaining creative control of its slate.
History
Robert Simonds founded STX Entertainment in 2014 after a successful career producing commercial comedies at major studios. The company raised significant capital from private equity and international partners, launching with the ambition to become a modern mini-major that could compete for talent and audience attention without the overhead of a traditional studio infrastructure.
Early releases included The Gift (2015), Bad Moms (2016), and The Upside (2019). Bad Moms became the studio's breakout hit, grossing over $183 million worldwide on a $20 million budget and spawning a sequel. The company also distributed Hustlers (2019), Greenland (2020), and The Gentlemen (2020).
STX merged with Eros International in 2021 to form Eros STX Global Corporation, creating a combined entity with significant Bollywood and Hollywood content libraries. The merger expanded the company's footprint in the Indian entertainment market.
