Toei Company
One of Japan's major film studios, producing and distributing live-action films, animation, and television. Behind Dragon Ball, One Piece, Sailor Moon, and the Super Sentai franchise.
Overview
Toei Company is one of Japan's major film studios, operating across film production, distribution, television production, and animation. Founded in 1951 as Toei Film Company, it quickly became one of the dominant forces in Japanese cinema, particularly known for jidaigeki (period dramas) and yakuza films. Toei Animation, its subsidiary, has produced some of the most globally recognized anime franchises in history.
The company operates from Tokyo and maintains production facilities, a distribution network covering the Japanese domestic market, and a significant presence in international licensing and content sales.
History
Toei was founded in 1951 through the merger of Toyoko Eigasha and Oizumi Eiga, two smaller Tokyo-based film companies. The studio quickly expanded, acquiring the Kyoto studios of Toa Eiga and building what became one of the most prolific studio systems in Japanese cinema history.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Toei dominated the domestic market with a studio-system approach modeled on golden-age Hollywood, producing dozens of films per year with contract actors, directors, and technicians. The studio's jidaigeki samurai films and yakuza action films were enormously popular, and Toei films shaped the aesthetic of Japanese popular cinema across several decades.
Toei Animation was established in 1956 and became Japan's first dedicated animation studio. It pioneered Japanese theatrical animation with Hakujaden (1958), considered the first feature-length color anime film. Subsequent decades saw Toei Animation produce iconic franchises that achieved global distribution: Dragon Ball (1986-present), Dragon Ball Z (1989-1996), Sailor Moon (1992-1997), One Piece (1999-present), Digimon (1999-present), Pretty Cure (2004-present), and the Super Sentai franchise (adapted as Power Rangers internationally).

What Filmmakers Should Know
For filmmakers interested in anime production and distribution, Toei Animation represents one of the founding institutions of the industry. The company's model of producing long-running series based on manga properties, combined with extensive international licensing, provides a case study in how Japanese animation achieves global commercial reach.
For live-action filmmakers, Toei's domestic distribution infrastructure covers the Japanese theatrical market alongside Toho, and the company occasionally produces internationally oriented content.
