Yash Raj Films
India's largest and most influential film production and distribution company, founded by Yash Chopra in 1970. YRF has produced some of the most beloved Hindi films in Bollywood history.
Overview
Yash Raj Films (YRF) is the largest privately owned film production and distribution company in India, operating from its own studio complex in Mumbai. Founded in 1970 by legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra, the company has produced and distributed many of the most commercially successful and culturally significant Hindi-language films in Bollywood history. YRF functions as a vertically integrated entity covering production, distribution, music, talent management, and merchandising.
The company is currently led by Aditya Chopra, Yash Chopra's son, who is both the chairman and one of India's most successful directors. Under Aditya Chopra's leadership, YRF has modernized its operations while maintaining the romantic, spectacle-driven filmmaking tradition established by his father.
History
Yash Chopra founded Yash Raj Films in 1970 after leaving his brother B.R. Chopra's production company. His first independent production, Daag (1973), was a commercial hit, and YRF went on to produce a string of landmark Hindi films including Deewar (1975), Chandni (1989), Lamhe (1991), and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995, directed by Aditya Chopra), which became the longest-running film in Indian cinema history at a single theater.
YRF's catalog includes some of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of all time: Dhoom franchise (2004-2013), Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008), Band Baaja Baaraat (2010), Sultan (2016), Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), War (2019), and Pathaan (2023). The company launched the YRF Spy Universe, connecting several action franchises into a shared cinematic universe.
YRF also operates YRF Music, one of the largest music labels in India, and YRF Studios, a state-of-the-art production facility in Mumbai. The company established its own international distribution arm, releasing its films directly in over 50 countries.
Studio Facilities
YRF Studios in Mumbai includes multiple sound stages, post-production suites, editing rooms, and recording studios. The facility is one of the most modern production complexes in India and houses both film and music production operations.
What Filmmakers Should Know
YRF develops projects internally and through relationships with established Hindi-language directors and writers. The company maintains a roster of talent under contract or first-look arrangements, following a model closer to the old Hollywood studio system than most contemporary production companies.
For international filmmakers and co-producers interested in the Indian market, YRF's distribution infrastructure covers both domestic Indian theatrical release and international distribution to the Indian diaspora audience. The company's scale and market knowledge make it an important partner for any project targeting Hindi-speaking audiences.
