Overview

IMAGO (International Federation of Cinematographers) is the international federation of national cinematographer societies, representing cinematographers from more than 50 countries through their respective national organizations. Founded in 1992 and headquartered in Brussels, IMAGO connects the ASC (United States), BSC (United Kingdom), AFC (France), BVK (Germany), ACS (Australia), and dozens of other national cinematography societies under a single international umbrella. The federation advocates for cinematography as a global art form, protects cinematographers' creative rights across national jurisdictions, and provides a platform for international exchange between the world's cinematography communities.

IMAGO's founding reflected the growing internationalization of film production, where a German DP might shoot a French co-production in Morocco with a British director and an American camera package. National professional frameworks were insufficient to address the cross-border realities of professional cinematography, and IMAGO was established to provide the international coordination that national societies alone could not offer.

Member Societies and Global Reach

IMAGO's member societies span every inhabited continent, making it genuinely global in its representation of the cinematography profession. Full member societies include established organizations like the ASC, BSC, AFC, and BVK alongside emerging national societies from African, Asian, and Latin American countries that are building their own professional cinematography communities. Associate membership provides a pathway for societies that are developing their organizational capacity.

The federation's diversity of membership -- from the ASC with its century of history to newly formed national societies -- reflects the global variation in how cinematography is organized and recognized professionally. IMAGO's role is partly to support less-established societies in building the professional frameworks that more established societies have developed over decades.

European Advocacy

IMAGO is particularly active in European cultural policy advocacy, engaging with the European Commission, the European Parliament, and European cultural funding bodies on issues affecting cinematographers working in European production. The organization advocates for consistent application of cinematographers' moral rights across European jurisdictions, for appropriate authorship recognition in European copyright law, and for cinematographer participation in the cultural policy discussions that shape European film funding.

The federation monitors European audiovisual policy developments and maintains positions on streaming platform obligations, content quotas, and copyright harmonization that directly affect the working conditions and creative rights of European cinematographers.

What Filmmakers Should Know

For directors working internationally, IMAGO membership by a DP signals a connection to the global cinematography professional community and awareness of international craft standards. IMAGO-affiliated DPs from non-Anglophone countries bring professional credentials that are recognized within the international cinematography community even when they lack ASC or BSC designation.

For DPs pursuing international careers, understanding which national society covers their home country and how IMAGO connects that society to the broader international cinematography world is useful professional context. Connecting with IMAGO's member societies provides access to international events, educational programs, and professional relationships that support global career development.
