International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF)

The international trade association representing film and television producers associations from more than 30 countries, accrediting international film festivals and advocating for producers' interests globally.

Overview

The International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF) is the international trade association representing film and television producers associations from more than 30 countries. Founded in 1933, FIAPF is best known for accrediting international film festivals -- the FIAPF accreditation system establishes which festivals are recognized as "competitive feature film festivals," giving the Cannes, Venice, Berlin, and other accredited festivals a formal international status that distinguishes them from the thousands of film festivals that operate without this recognition.

FIAPF's accreditation function is the most visible aspect of its work, but the federation also advocates for producers' interests in international policy arenas -- working with WIPO on intellectual property treaties, with the ILO on audiovisual production labor standards, and with UNESCO on cultural diversity policies that affect the conditions for film production and distribution worldwide.

FIAPF Festival Accreditation

FIAPF accredits international film festivals across four categories. Competitive Feature Film Festivals (the most prestigious category) include Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Karlovy Vary, Locarno, San Sebastián, Montreal, Cairo, Shanghai, Tokyo, and a handful of others -- these are the festivals authorized to award prizes for best feature film in competition. Competitive Specialized Feature Film Festivals cover festivals focused on specific genres or subjects. Competitive Documentary and Short Film Festivals accredit the most significant non-fiction festivals. Non-Competitive Film Festivals are accredited events that don't award competitive prizes.

For filmmakers, FIAPF accreditation is a quality signal about a festival's international standing, its jury processes, and its commitment to professional standards. A world premiere at a FIAPF-accredited competitive festival carries different market significance than a premiere at an unaccredited festival, and understanding which festivals hold FIAPF competitive status helps filmmakers make informed decisions about where to world-premiere their work.

International Copyright and Producers' Rights

FIAPF represents producers' interests in international copyright negotiations, advocating for intellectual property frameworks that protect audiovisual works in the digital environment. The federation participates in WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) treaty negotiations affecting film copyright, neighboring rights for producers, and the digital rights frameworks that govern how films are exploited across international borders.

The relationship between producers' rights and directors' and performers' rights -- particularly around the allocation of revenues from secondary exploitation and streaming -- is a persistent area of tension in international copyright policy that FIAPF navigates on behalf of producer members.

FIAPF Membership

FIAPF member associations include the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America), the British Film Institute, ANICA (Italy), and producers associations from dozens of other countries. This membership base spans both the major studio-aligned associations that represent Hollywood interests and the independent producers associations that represent smaller-scale international production. Balancing the interests of these diverse constituencies within a single federation's advocacy positions requires careful political management.

What Filmmakers Should Know

For filmmakers making festival strategy decisions, the FIAPF accreditation status of festivals they are considering as premiere venues is one relevant factor in assessing the festival's international standing. The full list of FIAPF-accredited festivals is published on the FIAPF website and provides a baseline reference for evaluating festival prestige and international recognition.

For producers engaging with international copyright policy, FIAPF's advocacy positions and published policy documents provide insight into how the global producers community is approaching emerging intellectual property challenges in the streaming era.
