Time Lapse Techniques for Filmmakers

Time-lapse photography condenses hours, days, or even months into seconds of footage. Here's how to plan and execute effective time-lapse sequences.

Calculating Your Interval

The interval between shots determines how "fast" time appears to move. Common intervals:

**1-2 seconds:** Fast-moving clouds, traffic

**5-10 seconds:** Sunsets, shadows moving

**30-60 seconds:** Construction, plant growth (over days)

**5-15 minutes:** Extreme long-term projects

To determine your final clip length:

Total Shots = Event Duration / Interval

Clip Length = Total Shots / Timeline FPS

For example, a 2-hour sunset at 5-second intervals played back at 24fps:

7200s / 5s = 1440 shots

1440 / 24 = 60 seconds of footage

**Lock your exposure** to manual to avoid flicker between frames

**Use an intervalometer** for precise, consistent timing

**Shoot wider** than you think --- you can always crop in post

**Plan for power** --- long time-lapses drain batteries quickly
