Berlinale -- Encounters
The Berlin International Film Festival's newest competitive section, launched in 2020, celebrating formally innovative and risk-taking cinema from both established and emerging directors.
Overview
Encounters is the Berlin International Film Festival's newest competitive section, launched in 2020 to create dedicated space for formally innovative and aesthetically adventurous cinema within the Berlinale framework. The section presents approximately 12 to 15 feature films and a handful of short films that represent experimental, hybrid, and formally challenging approaches to filmmaking.
Encounters was created in response to the observation that the most formally adventurous cinema was increasingly finding it difficult to compete alongside more conventionally structured films in the main Competition or Forum. By establishing a dedicated competitive section for innovative work, the Berlinale acknowledged the distinct criteria by which such films should be evaluated.
For filmmakers working at the edges of conventional narrative or documentary form, Encounters provides a prestigious platform that values formal ambition on its own terms rather than assessing it against mainstream standards.
Key Sections
- Encounters Feature Competition -- features competing for Encounters prizes
- Encounters Short Film Competition -- experimental and innovative short films
- Encounters Extra -- notable films outside formal competition
What Filmmakers Should Know
Encounters does not accept open submissions. Films are considered through the Berlinale selection process via submissions facilitated by sales agents and producers. Filmmakers whose work is formally innovative, hybrid, or experimental should ensure their work reaches the Berlinale selection committee.
An Encounters selection provides full Berlinale accreditation and access to the European Film Market (EFM), one of the world's most important film markets. The international press corps covering the Berlinale reviews Encounters films alongside Competition films, providing genuine critical exposure.
Major Awards
- Best Film in Encounters -- jury prize
- Special Jury Award in Encounters
Festival History
Encounters was launched in 2020 in the same edition that was dramatically curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The section has developed its identity through subsequent editions, establishing itself as a genuine destination for formally adventurous cinema within the Berlinale.
