Overview

Fantasporto is one of Europe's most important genre film festivals. Founded in 1981 and held annually in February and March in Porto -- Portugal's second city, the birthplace of port wine, and a city of extraordinary medieval and Baroque architecture on the Douro River -- the festival presents competitive fantastic, science fiction, and horror cinema alongside a broader international film program.

Fantasporto was founded by Mário Dorminsky and Beatriz Pacheco Pereira with a mission to treat genre cinema with the same critical seriousness as art cinema. The festival has operated for over four decades with this philosophy, creating one of Europe's most established genre film platforms and providing early international recognition to numerous directors who later achieved wider acclaim.

Porto's dramatic setting -- its steep hillsides covered in azulejo tile-clad buildings overlooking the Douro gorge -- creates a festival environment with an inherent quality of fantasy and unreality that perfectly complements the genre programming.
