Overview
Fantasporto is Portugal's longest-running genre film festival. The 46th edition ran February 27 to March 8, 2026, at the Batalha Centro de Cinema in Porto. Founded in 1981 by Mario Dorminsky and Beatriz Pacheco Pereira, the festival programs competitive fantasy, horror, and auteur cinema across five official competition sections plus non-competitive sidebars. The 47th edition is scheduled for February 26 to March 7, 2027.
Fantasporto does not charge submission fees, making it one of the few European competitive festivals with entirely free submissions. Filmmakers submit screeners via email to info@fantasporto.com with a signed entry form from the festival website. The deadline for the 46th edition was November 30, 2025, with decisions by December 1, 2025.
The 46th edition screened approximately 350 films. The two main competitive sections are the Fantasy Cinema Competition and Directors Week (for auteur films of all genres, awarded the Manoel de Oliveira Prize). The 2026 Grand Prize went to The Dollmaker (dir. Jose Maria Cicala, Argentina), while Directors Week Best Film went to Wild Nights, Tamed Beasts (dir. Wang Tong, China).
Submission Details
Fantasporto accepts submissions via email. The Rules and Regulations for the 46th edition specify:
Eligibility requirements:
- Films must be produced in 2025 (for the 2026 edition)
- Films must be unreleased in Portugal (Portugal premiere required)
- Fantasy Feature Films: fantasy as main genre, feature-length
- Fantasy Short Films: fantasy genre only, maximum 15 minutes
- Directors Week: feature-length films of all genres
- Orient Express: Asian feature films only
- Portuguese Film Award: world premieres of Portuguese films (any length)
Submission process:
- No submission fee (the festival does not accept or pay fees)
- Submit an online screener with a signed entry form to info@fantasporto.com
- Deadline: November 30, 2025 (for the 46th edition)
- Selection decisions announced by December 1, 2025
If selected, filmmakers must provide by December 10:
- Dialogue list in English
- Screener link with password valid until March 9, 2026
- Five or more stills (jpg 300 dpi), one must be the poster in A5 format
- Press book and trailer in mp4 format
Exhibition format: Open DCP only. Non-English films must have burned English subtitles.

Festival History
Fantasporto was founded in 1981 by Mario Dorminsky and Beatriz Pacheco Pereira in Porto. The festival was established with a mission to treat genre cinema with the same critical seriousness as art cinema. When Fantasporto launched, genre films were largely excluded from European A-list festival programs. The festival is named after "fantastic" cinema, combining "fant" with "Porto." The 2026 edition paid tribute to Ana Megre, who participated in 43 of the festival's 46 editions.
The festival's venue, the Batalha Centro de Cinema, is a historic cinema in central Porto. The Directors Week section, named after filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira, expanded the festival's scope beyond genre cinema to include auteur films of all genres.

- Directors Week Best Film: Narcosis (dir. Martijn de Jong, Netherlands).
Notable Alumni Films and Where They Ended Up
According to the festival's founders, the directors of seven Academy Award Best Picture winners screened their first films at Fantasporto. Alumni include:
- David Lynch - early work screened before Blue Velvet (1986) and Mulholland Drive (2001).
- Peter Jackson - early work screened before The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which won 17 Academy Awards.
- Pedro Almodovar - early work screened. Later won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Talk to Her (2002).
- Denis Villeneuve - early work screened. Later directed Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024).
- Danny Boyle - early work screened. Later won the Academy Award for Best Director for Slumdog Millionaire (2008).
The festival has also helped circulate genre films that achieved cult status, including Cronos (dir. Guillermo del Toro, 1993), REC (dirs. Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza, 2007), and The Babadook (dir. Jennifer Kent, 2014).

- Take advantage of the free submission policy. There is no financial risk to submitting.

- Secure your Portugal premiere. Films must be unreleased in Portugal.
- Target the right section. Fantasy Cinema Competition requires fantasy as the main genre. Directors Week accepts all genres. Orient Express is for Asian features only. Portuguese Film Award requires a world premiere.
- Short films must be 15 minutes or less. The Fantasy Short Film competition has a strict 15-minute maximum.
- Prepare deliverables quickly if selected. Selected filmmakers must provide by December 10: a dialogue list, screener link, stills at 300 dpi, press book, and trailer in mp4. Exhibition format is Open DCP only.
- Submit films produced in the previous year. The 46th edition required films produced in 2025.

Fantasporto is one of Europe's longest-running genre film festivals, with over four decades of continuous operation since 1981. It was named one of Dread Central's "Best Horror Festivals in the World" in 2021 and 2022, and one of the "25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World" by MovieMaker in 2023.
