IndieLisboa -- Lisbon International Independent Film Festival
Portugal's most important independent film festival, held annually in April-May in Lisbon, presenting adventurous international and Portuguese independent cinema in one of Europe's most beautiful and rapidly evolving capitals.
Overview
IndieLisboa is Portugal's most important independent film festival. Founded in 2004 and held annually in April and May in Lisbon -- Portugal's Atlantic coast capital, one of Europe's oldest and most beautiful cities, currently experiencing a major cultural and economic renaissance -- the festival presents adventurous international and Portuguese independent cinema.
Lisbon's transformation from one of Europe's most melancholic and overlooked capitals into one of its most vibrant and visited cities has created an arts scene of unusual energy. The city's extraordinary architectural heritage -- from Moorish Alfama neighborhood through the Pombaline downtown rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake to the modernist Belem district -- creates a festival setting of exceptional visual richness.
Portugal's cinema tradition, centered on the formally radical work of directors including Manoel de Oliveira and Pedro Costa, has produced work of international significance on minimal budgets, creating a national cinema tradition that values formal ambition over commercial appeal.
