Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF)
Romania's most important film festival, FIAPF-accredited as a Competitive Specialized Feature Film Festival, held annually in May-June in Cluj-Napoca, presenting competitive international and Romanian cinema in the heart of Transylvania.
Overview
The Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF) is Romania's most important film festival. Founded in 2002 and held annually in May and June in Cluj-Napoca -- Romania's second-largest city and the cultural capital of Transylvania -- the festival is FIAPF-accredited and presents competitive international and Romanian cinema in the heart of Transylvania.
Romania's film tradition has produced internationally acclaimed directors including Cristian Mungiu, Cristi Puiu, and Corneliu Porumboiu -- the Romanian New Wave that emerged in the 2000s and became one of world cinema's most celebrated national movements. TIFF provides the most important domestic platform for this tradition.
Cluj-Napoca's character as a vibrant university city with a large young population and a growing technology industry creates an audience that is both intellectually engaged and enthusiastic. The festival transforms the city's historic center into festival space, with outdoor screenings in the main square creating spectacular public cinema events.
