Overview

The Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG) is Latin America's most important film market and one of its most prestigious competitive festivals. Founded in 1986 and held annually in March in Guadalajara -- Mexico's second-largest city, the birthplace of mariachi and tequila, and one of Latin America's most vibrant cultural centers -- the festival presents Spanish-language and international cinema alongside the continent's most active co-production market.

FICG's industry activities are its most distinctive contribution to Latin American cinema. The Guadalajara Market (MERCADO), the co-production forum, and the pitching competitions have made the festival the most important destination in the Latin American industry calendar for financing, co-production, and distribution. Latin American productions routinely trace their financing to meetings first made at Guadalajara.

Mexico's extraordinary film tradition -- from the Golden Age of Mexican cinema in the 1940s and 1950s through the international success of directors including Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuaron, and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu -- gives the festival a domestic film culture of remarkable depth.
