Belgrade International Film Festival (FEST)
Serbia's most important film festival, held annually in February-March in Belgrade, presenting competitive international and Serbian cinema in one of southeastern Europe's most vibrant cultural capitals.
Overview
The Belgrade International Film Festival (FEST) is Serbia's most important film festival. Founded in 1971 during the Yugoslav era and held annually in February and March in Belgrade, the festival is one of the oldest film festivals in the Balkans and has been a consistent platform for world cinema in southeastern Europe.
FEST's founding in 1971 came during a period when Yugoslavia was pursuing an independent path between East and West. Yugoslav cinema of this period was internationally significant, and the festival reflected this cultural ambition by presenting world cinema to Yugoslav audiences at a time when citizens of most communist countries had very limited access to Western films.
Belgrade's post-Yugoslav identity -- as the capital of Serbia after the tragic wars of the 1990s -- gives the festival a complex historical context. The city's extraordinary energy, its nightlife culture, and its determination to maintain cultural vitality through difficult circumstances create a resilient and engaged festival community.
