Overview

The CrossCurrent Canada Doc Fund is administered by Hot Docs, Canada's leading documentary festival, and forms one half of Hot Docs' CrossCurrents fund portfolio -- the other being the CrossCurrents International Doc Fund for non-Canadian projects. The Canada fund supports Canadian documentary filmmakers whose perspectives have been historically underrepresented or marginalised, with a mandate to promote inclusion and diverse voices within the Canadian documentary sector.

The fund was initiated with support from the R&M Lang Foundation and has built a track record of backing Canadian documentary talent from communities not well served by mainstream funding structures.

What It Funds

The CrossCurrent Canada Doc Fund provides grants to Canadian documentary projects at the development and production stages. The fund prioritises projects where the filmmaker's own background or the film's subject matter represents communities that have been historically excluded from the mainstream documentary funding ecosystem.

In addition to financial support, the fund connects grantees to Hot Docs' broader industry infrastructure, including the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, industry events, and the professional development programs that Hot Docs operates alongside its fund portfolio.

Eligibility

Applicants must be Canadian filmmakers. The fund's mandate centres on inclusion and representation: filmmakers from communities whose perspectives have been historically underrepresented or marginalised in Canadian documentary are the primary audience. This includes but is not limited to filmmakers from Indigenous communities, communities of colour, LGBTQ+ communities, and communities defined by disability, class, or geographic marginalisation.

Projects may be at the development or production stage. Applications are reviewed annually, with deadlines tied to Hot Docs' fund calendar.

Relationship to the Hot Docs Fund Ecosystem

Hot Docs administers several documentary funds simultaneously, each with distinct mandates. The Ted Rogers Fund supports Canadian documentary projects broadly. The Blue Ice Docs Fund supports African documentary projects. The CrossCurrents funds address underrepresented communities in both Canada and internationally. Filmmakers should review the full Hot Docs fund portfolio when building their financing strategy, as projects may be eligible for multiple programs.

Who Should Apply

Canadian documentary filmmakers from communities that have been historically underrepresented or marginalised in the documentary funding landscape, with a project at the development or production stage. The fund is open to emerging and mid-career filmmakers.
