Film Independent Directing Lab
A five-week intensive lab for directors preparing independent feature films, providing scene workshops with actors and guidance from established creative advisors.
Overview
The Film Independent Directing Lab is a five-week program for directors in active pre-production on an independent feature film. Running from April through May each year, the lab gives directors structured time to work with actors on selected scenes from their screenplay under the guidance of established creative advisors drawn from the independent film community.
The program is not a cash grant. Its value is experiential: participants work through scenes with professional actors and an acting coach, building the director-actor vocabulary and rehearsal process that translates directly to the set. Creative advisors -- working directors, producers, and casting professionals -- provide feedback on the work and on the director's approach to the material.
What the Lab Provides
Fellows receive:
- Five weeks of intensive scene workshops with actors and an acting coach
- Individualized feedback from creative advisors with industry experience
- Access to Film Independent's broader ecosystem of screenings, networking events, and education programs
- Exposure to potential producing and collaborator relationships through Film Independent's membership and events
Eligibility
Applicants must be directors with a feature-length narrative screenplay in active pre-production. The lab is designed for directors who are genuinely preparing to shoot -- not for projects in early development. Film Independent looks for directors at any career stage, though the program is particularly suited to emerging and mid-career filmmakers who have not yet directed a studio or major independent feature.
Note: The Directing Lab is distinct from Film Independent's Documentary Lab, which runs as a separate track for nonfiction filmmakers. Directors working in documentary should look at the Documentary Story Lab and Documentary Producing Lab instead.
Application Timeline
Applications typically open in early spring. Film Independent Members receive an extended deadline beyond the standard non-member deadline. Membership is not required to apply but offers a meaningful advantage in terms of application timing and access to supplementary programs.
Who Should Apply
Independent feature film directors in active pre-production who want structured rehearsal time and professional feedback before their shoot. The lab is most valuable to directors whose projects rely heavily on performance -- dramas, character-driven narratives, and dialogue-intensive scripts benefit most from the scene workshop format.
