Film Independent Documentary Labs

Overview

Film Independent's Documentary Labs operate as two parallel tracks: the Documentary Story Lab for directors and the Documentary Producing Lab for producers. Both are intensive, one-week programs that advance the careers of nonfiction filmmakers by connecting them with film professionals who provide advice and expertise on the craft and business of documentary filmmaking.

The Documentary Story Lab launched in its current form in 2024 as an expansion of Film Independent's long-running Documentary Lab program. The 2026 Story Lab (the 3rd annual) selected 9 filmmakers across 6 projects and kicked off May 4, 2026. The Documentary Producing Lab launched in 2024 as well, with the 2025 edition (the 2nd annual) selecting 6 fellows and concluding September 19, 2025.

Six projects are selected for each lab. Both labs are supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Documentary Story Lab

The Story Lab focuses on the craft of nonfiction filmmaking at the editing stage. Directors with projects in late production or early post-production attend multiple workshops and sessions with guest speakers, established documentary directors, institutional funders, legal professionals, and distributors.

What the Story Lab Provides

• One week of intensive workshops and one-on-one sessions
• Pairing with an experienced Editing Advisor who provides individualized support during and after the lab
• Directing Advisors who provide creative guidance
• A final pitch event with industry executives for feedback and discussion
• Access to Film Independent's year-round community of fellows, screenings, and networking events
• Eligibility for named fellowship grants (Cayton-Goldrich Family Foundation Fellowship: $10,000 to a Jewish filmmaker)

Editing Advisors for the 2026 Story Lab included Alejandro Valdes-Rochin (Maxima), Claire Didier (Enigma), Pablo Proenza (Natchez), Christy Denes, ACE (Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal), Veronica Pinkham (Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me), and Inbal B. Lessner, ACE (Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult).

Story Lab Eligibility

• Open to individual directors or directing teams
• Director/producers are eligible (applicants who hold both a director and producer credit on the film)
• Projects must be in the final stages of production or early post-production
• Projects in research and/or development are not eligible
• Projects with a locked picture edit are not eligible
• Applicants must submit a minimum of a polished trailer and scene selects, and at maximum a full assembly or rough cut
• Accepted filmmakers must have an assembly or rough cut ready two weeks before the start of the lab

Story Lab 2026 Timeline

• Applications open: October 6, 2025
• Non-member deadline: December 15, 2025
• Member extended deadline: January 5, 2026
• Lab dates: May 4, 2026 (one week)

Documentary Producing Lab

The Producing Lab focuses on the business side of documentary production: financing, distribution strategy, impact campaigns, and the producer's role in building a project from concept to release.

What the Producing Lab Provides

• One week of workshops designed to help producers navigate the documentary landscape
• Focus on financing, finishing, and distributing nonfiction films
• Pairing with professionals working in nonfiction filmmaking
• Multiple case studies with notable nonfiction producers
• A networking day with industry guests
• Professional coaching from Renee Freedman and Company, supported by The Harnisch Foundation
• A small stipend per project to assist with travel costs
• Eligibility for named fellowship grants (MPAC Hollywood Bureau Fellowship: $10,000 to a filmmaker who identifies as American Muslim)

Producing Lab Eligibility

• Open to individual producers or producing teams
• Projects must be in active development, production, or post-production
• Applicants who are also directing the project they are submitting are ineligible (director/producers cannot apply to the Producing Lab)
• Applicants must submit a work sample from their current project (short trailer or teaser). If no current project work sample is available, a work sample of a previous project is acceptable
• Must have a producer credit (not executive or associate producer credits) on at least one film in any genre or format

Producing Lab 2026 Timeline

• Applications open: March 9, 2026
• Non-member deadline: May 4, 2026
• Member extended deadline: May 18, 2026
• Lab dates: September 2026 (one week, in person at Film Independent's Los Angeles office)

How the Two Labs Relate

The two tracks run on different schedules (spring for Story, fall for Producing), which creates opportunities for director-producer teams to attend their respective labs in the same program year. However, each lab requires a separate application. Acceptance into one lab does not guarantee acceptance into the other.

Projects can submit to both labs, but applicants should note the eligibility distinction: a filmmaker who holds both a director and producer credit on the same film is eligible for the Story Lab but not the Producing Lab. This rule ensures the Producing Lab remains focused on producers who are not also directing the submitted project.

Projects supported by Film Independent's Documentary programs include:

• Jessica Kingdon - Ascension (2021) - Documentary Lab alumna. Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary Feature. Won Tribeca Best Documentary Film. An observational documentary about China's industrial supply chain.

• Bing Liu and Diane Quon - Minding the Gap (2018) - Documentary Lab alumnae. Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary Feature. Won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award at Sundance 2018. A coming-of-age documentary about skateboarding friends in Rockford, Illinois.

• Sara Dosa - Fire of Love (2022) - Documentary Lab alumna. Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary Feature. Acquired by National Geographic. The film tells the story of volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft.

• Navalny - Academy Award winner for Best Documentary Feature, produced by Shane Boris
• Black Snow by Alina Simone and Kirstine Barfod - Documentary Lab 2023
• Natchez by Suzannah Herbert - Tribeca 2025, Best Documentary winner

Filmmakers supported by the program include Academy Award winner Shane Boris, Academy Award nominee Sara Dosa, and Emmy Award winner Lana Wilson.

What Makes a Competitive Application

1. Project stage specificity - The Story Lab only accepts projects in the final stages of production or early post-production. Projects in research or development, or with a locked picture edit, are not eligible. The Producing Lab accepts development, production, or post-production projects.
2. Compelling, original, unique vision - Film Independent looks for documentary projects that are compelling, original, and demonstrate a unique vision.
3. Strong work sample - For the Story Lab, submit a minimum of a polished trailer and scene selects, and at maximum a full assembly or rough cut. For the Producing Lab, submit a short trailer or teaser. Accepted filmmakers must have an assembly or rough cut ready two weeks before the lab starts.
4. Community care and accountability - The application must include sections on accountability, community care, and safety, reflecting Film Independent's emphasis on ethical filmmaking practices.
5. Clear articulation of why this program - Film Independent asks applicants to answer: Why this project? Why you? Why now? Why this program? Being specific about what you hope to gain from the program is crucial.

Application Fee and Membership

• Filmmaker Pro Members: Free (limited to one waived fee per membership year)
• Film Independent Members: $45
• Non-members: $65

Film Independent Membership is not required to apply. All participants accepted into the labs must join Film Independent at the General Membership rate of $105 per year. Applications are submitted through the Film Independent Submittable page.

Artist Sustainability Fund

Producing Lab fellows also receive support from Film Independent's Artist Sustainability Fund, which provides sustainability grants in recognition of the time and talent of participating filmmakers. This fund addresses a structural problem in lab programming: fellows are expected to commit full-time to a one-week intensive without compensation for time away from paid work.

Who Should Apply

Documentary Story Lab: Nonfiction directors with a project in late production or early post-production who want structured professional feedback on their edit, story structure, and creative approach. The lab is most valuable for directors who have substantial footage and are grappling with how to shape it into a coherent narrative. Directors who are still in research or development should wait. Directors who have already locked their picture edit are not eligible and should seek finishing funds or distribution support instead.

Documentary Producing Lab: Nonfiction producers with a project in active development, production, or post-production who want expert guidance on financing, finishing, and distribution strategy. The lab is most valuable for producers who are actively building a financing strategy and need industry connections and case-study knowledge to position their project effectively. Producers who are also directing their submitted project are not eligible.

Director-producer teams can apply to the respective tracks simultaneously, but each person submits a separate application for their specific lab.
