Overview

Film Independent's Documentary Lab runs two parallel tracks: the Documentary Story Lab for directors and the Documentary Producing Lab for producers. Both advance the careers of nonfiction filmmakers through a series of meetings and workshops that introduce participants to film professionals who provide advice and expertise on the craft and business of documentary filmmaking.

The two tracks run concurrently, which creates opportunities for director-producer teams to attend together, though individual applications from directors or producers without a partnered team are also welcome.

Documentary Story Lab

The Story Lab focuses on the craft of nonfiction filmmaking: editorial structure, approach to subject, and the director's voice. Fellows work through their project with story advisors drawn from the documentary community, receiving feedback on the film's narrative architecture and creative decisions. The lab is designed for projects in active development or production -- directors should have substantial footage or a strong development package.

Documentary Producing Lab

The Producing Lab focuses on the business side of documentary production: financing, distribution strategy, impact campaigns, and the producer's role in building a project from concept to release. Fellows connect with experienced producers, distributors, and funders who provide guidance on how to position a documentary project for financing and distribution success.

What the Labs Provide

Fellows in both labs receive:

  • Multiple workshops and one-on-one meetings with advisors over the program period
  • Access to Film Independent's screenings, networking events, and membership community
  • Exposure to industry professionals who serve as advisors, mentors, and potential collaborators
  • Eligibility for additional Film Independent grants and awards programs available to fellows

Eligibility

Film Independent seeks nonfiction filmmakers at any career stage. Projects should be in active development or production -- the labs are not designed for projects at the concept stage only. International filmmakers are eligible to apply.

Who Should Apply

Documentary directors with a project in development or production who want structured professional feedback on their creative approach, and documentary producers who want expert guidance on financing and distribution strategy. Director-producer teams can apply to the respective tracks simultaneously.
