Canadian Society of Cinematographers (CSC)

Overview

The Canadian Society of Cinematographers (CSC) is the honorary professional society for cinematographers in Canada. Founded in 1957, the CSC is a non-profit organization with over 830 members across all categories. The Society promotes the art and craft of cinematography through peer-reviewed membership, annual awards, educational programs, and its magazine, Canadian Cinematographer.

The CSC is not a labor union. It does not negotiate wages, working conditions, or collective bargaining agreements. It is an honorary and educational society, comparable in structure to the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC). Full Members in good standing are entitled to use the post-nominal "csc" (lowercase, without punctuation) in professional contexts, including credits and communications. The current President is George Willis, csc, sasc.

The CSC is Canada's member society within IMAGO (the International Federation of Cinematographers), connecting Canadian cinematographers to the global cinematography community. In 2025, the CSC re-established ties with IMAGO and attended its annual conference. The CSC also built its first relationship with Camerimage, representing the Society at the November 2025 festival in Torun, Poland.

Membership Categories and Requirements

The CSC offers five membership categories. Full Membership is by invitation only; all other categories accept direct applications.

Full Membership (csc designation)

Full Membership is by invitation only. A candidate must be nominated by three current Full CSC members who submit individual nomination letters to admin@csc.ca. Candidates and their agents or managers may not solicit nominations. Once the letters are received, the nominee is sent an application package. Applicants must have been professionally employed as cinematographers for at least 10 years and be fully qualified to assume the responsibilities of a Director of Photography. Applicants must submit at least 5 long-form or 10 short-form complete productions for review by the Membership Committee, which is composed exclusively of Full or Full Life members. Approval requires at least 80% positive votes from qualified committee members. There is no appeals process. Life membership is available to members aged 65 or older with at least 25 years of good standing, waiving annual dues.

Associate Membership

Available to individuals recognized as working cinematographers for a period acceptable to the Membership Committee. Applicants must submit a current CV and the Associate Membership Application. Associate Members do not use post-nominals but gain voting rights in Society matters.

Affiliate Membership

Available to camera operators, camera assistants, or Digital Imaging Technicians who have been employed on-set with recognized cinematographers. Applicants may also qualify by completing professional training in one of these three camera team roles via post-secondary educational programs acceptable to the Membership Committee. Applicants must submit a current CV and the Affiliate Membership Application.

Student Membership

Available to students enrolled in a cinematography-related program at a Canadian post-secondary institution. The Membership Committee determines whether the applicant's program qualifies. Applicants must submit a current CV and a student card (front and back) or proof of program enrollment, along with the Student Membership Application.

Companion Membership

Available to professionals actively employed in positions intrinsically related to cinematography (e.g., equipment specialists, post-production artists). The Membership Committee is the sole arbiter for acceptance. Applicants must submit a current CV and the Companion Membership Application.

Annual membership fees are determined by the Board of Directors and are outlined on the application forms. The CSC fiscal year runs from October 1 to September 30. Members can upgrade their category as their career progresses. The Membership Committee meets at least twice yearly to review applications.

CSC Awards

The CSC presents annual awards recognizing outstanding cinematography in Canadian production. The 68th Annual CSC Awards Gala was held at Koerner Hall in Toronto, celebrating the 2025 winners across 10 competitive categories:

2025 special award recipients included Jeremy Benning csc, asc (President's Award for outstanding service to the CSC), Gregory D. Middleton csc, asc (Masters Award for outstanding contribution to the art of cinematography), and Nicolas Marion (Camera Assistant Award of Merit, sponsored by IATSE 667). The awards are competitive and open to all Canadian cinematographers. Nominees and winners are chosen by jury.

The 2026 CSC Awards are open for submissions. The Annual Awards Gala is a competitive event open to all Canadian cinematographers, with nominees and winners chosen by jury and honored by the CSC for outstanding work in cinematography.

Education and Community Programs

The CSC runs extensive education and community programs:

• ASC Master Classes: In May 2025, the CSC partnered with the ASC for a Master Class in Toronto, sponsored by Sony, featuring Boris Mojsovski csc, asc and Tommy Maddox-Upshaw asc. A second edition was held in Vancouver in August 2025 with Jon Joffin asc and Kim Myles csc, asc, mysc.
• Women's DP Camera Intensive: The CSC completed its second two-week, female-led DP camera intensive, an initiative designed to support women entering the cinematography profession.
• Demystifying the Camera Workshop: A first-ever collaboration with the Canadian Film Centre, designed for actors.
• CSC Herc On-Set Apprenticeship Program: An ongoing apprenticeship initiative placing emerging camera professionals on working productions.
• Photography Exhibits: The CSC launched photography exhibits at its Montreal clubhouse, CineGround, showcasing the work of Quebec DPs including Pierre Letarte csc, Claudine Sauve csc, and Shawn Pavlin.
• Canadian Cinematographer Magazine: Published by the CSC, the magazine covers technical and craft developments relevant to professional DPs. It has been published continuously since November 1961.

Membership continues to grow, now at 830 across all categories.

What Filmmakers Should Know

For directors working with Canadian DPs, the "csc" designation signals peer-recognized professional standing within the Canadian cinematography community. Full Membership requires 10 years of professional experience, nomination by 3 current Full Members, and 80% approval from the Membership Committee, making it a rigorous credential.

For international productions shooting in Canada and accessing Canadian tax credits, CSC membership provides a quality indicator for evaluating Canadian DP candidates. Vancouver and Toronto are two of the world's largest production centers for international production, and CSC membership connects DPs working in those centers to a national professional community.

For cinematographers building Canadian careers, CSC membership provides professional community, awards eligibility, IMAGO connection, educational programs, and the professional credibility that supports career development. Associate Membership is the entry point for working DPs who do not yet qualify for Full Membership. Affiliate Membership is available for camera operators, assistants, and DITs. Student Membership is available for those enrolled in qualifying Canadian post-secondary cinematography programs.
