TIFF Talent Development Programs

Overview

The Toronto International Film Festival runs four talent development programs that select emerging directors, screenwriters, series creators, and producer-director teams for intensive mentorship during the festival each September. The programs operate under TIFF's talent development umbrella, which has committed to ensuring at least 50% of selected participants are BIPOC and at least 50% are women.

For the 2026 cycle, TIFF is launching "TIFF: The Market," a reimagined industry platform that expands the talent development programs and integrates them with business networking opportunities. Applications open in February 2026 for program attendance and business meetings in September 2026. The Directors' Lab charges an application fee of CA $46.75 (early deadline) or CA $55.00 (final deadline). Selected participants receive financial support to cover travel and accommodation costs during the program.

The four current programs are:

1. Directors' Lab (formerly Filmmaker Lab): 20 Canadian and international directors, 5-day program
2. Writers' Studio: 8 Canadian and international screenwriters, 5-day intensive
3. Series Accelerator: 8 Canadian series creator teams from underrepresented communities, 2-day program
4. Every Story Accelerator: 2 Canadian producer-director teams with feature projects in post-production

Award-winning alumni include Fawzia Mirza (The Queen of My Dreams), Zarrar Kahn (In Flames), and Chandler Levack (I Like Movies).

Historical Context: The Talent Accelerator (2019 to 2022)

The "Talent Accelerator" name specifically refers to a program that ran from 2019 to 2022. It selected six Canadian women creators annually and provided them with mentorship, support, and access to TIFF Industry programming year-round. Two directors were fast-tracked into the TIFF Filmmaker Lab, two writers into the TIFF Writers' Studio, and two producers received a travel stipend and industry accreditation to either Sundance or the Berlin Film Festival. The program was supported by Share Her Journey donors, including the RBC Women Creators' Initiative. The last published cohort was in 2022.

TIFF has since restructured its talent development offerings. The resources and goals of the Talent Accelerator have been distributed across the current programs, particularly the Every Story Accelerator (which supports creators from diverse backgrounds) and the Directors' Lab (which now accepts both Canadian and international applicants). Filmmakers who would have applied to the Talent Accelerator should now apply to the program that matches their discipline and career stage.

Program Details

Directors' Lab

The Directors' Lab is TIFF's flagship talent development program. It selects 20 Canadian and international directors to participate in a 5-day intensive during the Toronto International Film Festival in September. The 2026 program runs September 9 to 13.

Participants receive mentorship from established directors, producers, agents, distributors, and industry experts. The program focuses on refining debut feature film projects and preparing them for the marketplace. Selected participants receive financial support to be in Toronto for the duration of the program, with specifics outlined in their official invitation.

Eligibility requirements:

• Open to Canadian and international emerging directors developing their feature film debut
• Minimum of two short-film credits as director or screenwriter, both selected for an accredited film festival or screening series
• Applicants who have already directed a feature-length narrative film that screened at major festivals (Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Sundance, SXSW, Toronto, Tribeca, Locarno, Rotterdam, Busan, BFI London, Austin) are ineligible
• Short films, episodic series, or other media that premiered at those festivals do not affect eligibility

2026 selection timeline:

Writers' Studio

The Writers' Studio selects 8 Canadian and international screenwriters for a collaborative 4 to 5-day intensive lab. Participants consolidate skills, exchange ideas, and develop scripts through workshops, artist talks, table reads, peer-to-peer mentorship, and one-on-one project development with story consultants.

For the 2026 cycle under TIFF: The Market, the Writers' Studio will be followed by a script polish period with a development executive. Participants develop enhanced script packages to participate in Market business networking. Applications open February 2026 for program attendance in April 2026, a polish period over Summer 2026, and business meetings in September 2026.

Alumni are invited to participate in the CHANEL Women Creators' Network, which provides women and non-binary participants with ongoing script development support after the program ends.

Series Accelerator

Launched at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, the Series Accelerator is a 2-day mentorship intensive for 8 Canadian series creator teams from underrepresented communities. Presented by the Canada Media Fund, the program offers tailored training to refine series pitches and develop business plans.

Participants receive guidance from TIFF's programming team and industry professionals on topics including project packaging, audience targeting, and international co-production, distribution, and sales strategies. The program is exclusively for Canadian creator teams.

Every Story Accelerator

The Every Story Accelerator, presented by the RBC Screen Creators' Initiative, supports emerging creators from diverse backgrounds who identify as Black, Indigenous, a person of colour, 2SLGBTQ+, or from other equity-deserving groups. Each year, two producer-director teams with feature-length projects in post-production receive targeted support to pitch their projects to industry decision-makers in three key markets.

Both participating teams in 2023 received a Micki Moore Fellowship, supported by Toronto-based broadcaster, journalist, and actor Micki Moore.

What It Covers

All four programs provide:

• Festival accreditation: Access to TIFF screenings and industry programming during the festival
• Mentorship: One-on-one sessions with established filmmakers, producers, agents, and distributors
• Project development: Workshops and consultations tailored to the participant's discipline
• Networking: Access to TIFF: The Market and delegate resources, connecting participants with distributors, sales agents, and financiers
• Financial support: Selected participants receive financial support for travel and accommodation (specifics provided in the invitation)

How to Apply

Applications are submitted through the TIFF filmmaker development portal. Each program has its own application form and requirements. The general application requires:

• Professional CV or resume
• Work sample (short films or previous projects)
• Project description or script excerpt
• Personal statement

The Directors' Lab requires an application fee (CA $46.75 early, CA $55.00 final). Other programs do not charge an application fee. All applications are completed online.

Who Should Apply

Directors' Lab: Emerging Canadian and international directors developing their first feature film who have at least two short-film credits at accredited festivals. The program is not for directors who have already premiered a feature at a major festival.

Writers' Studio: Canadian and international screenwriters with a project ready for intensive development. The program accepts both emerging and mid-career writers.

Series Accelerator: Canadian series creator teams from underrepresented communities with a series project in development. Teams must be based in Canada.

Every Story Accelerator: Canadian producer-director teams from equity-deserving groups with a feature-length project in post-production. The program is specifically for creators who identify as Black, Indigenous, a person of colour, 2SLGBTQ+, or from other equity-deserving communities.

Filmmakers who are still in film school without professional credits do not meet the eligibility requirements for most programs. Those filmmakers should look at student-focused programs instead, such as BAFTA Breakthrough UK or the BAFTA US Scholarship.

Common Confusions

The Talent Accelerator no longer exists as a standalone program. It ran from 2019 to 2022 and supported six Canadian women creators per cycle. Filmmakers who find references to the Talent Accelerator should apply to the current programs instead. The Directors' Lab and Every Story Accelerator have absorbed its goals.

The Directors' Lab is not a film school or training course. It is a professional development intensive for directors with existing short-film credits. The eligibility requirement of two short films at accredited festivals is strictly enforced.

The programs do not provide cash grants or production funding. TIFF's talent development programs provide mentorship, industry access, and networking. The Series Accelerator is only for Canadian teams. Unlike the Directors' Lab and Writers' Studio, which accept international applicants, the Series Accelerator is restricted to Canadian creator teams from underrepresented communities.
